At a time in our history where it seems that we are so divided in our beliefs, the book I’ve been reading seems to strike a note that is important to keep in mind. The Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet by Jamie Ford is about the Japanese internment during WWII seen through the eyes of a bystander (a young Chinese boy who befriends a Japanese girl).
I haven’t finished the book yet. I am so engrossed in this man/boy’s world that I find it hard to go on. I try to remind myself – it’s just a story – but I’m as engaged as I am with Facebook friends. I care deeply about this character’s world filled with people I could know.
The book has made me think about more than the injustices from years ago. It has also made me think how easy is it for us to see different as bad and dangerous when in truth we are all just people making our way the best we can.
The boy was brave in ways I’m not sure I can be. Do I stand up for those who are being unfairly treated because they are different? Unfortunately, I don’t think so.
